The main objective of this study is to functionally analyze the indicative imperfect and the role it plays in the realization of the free indirect speech in Alberto Moravia's work "The Indifferent".
At the beginning we try to trace the more general characteristics attributed to the form of the free indirect speech that occurs when there is an intersection of parameters of the two different deictic centers to which the citation of sentences can give rise: the deictic center of the sentences originally produced and that of the quoted narrative. This form can be defined as a hybrid construction between that of direct speech and that of indirect speech.
With the imperfect, author and protagonist immerse themselves in the degree of making us feel that it is the protagonist himself who expresses his thoughts.
In fact, the DIL is used to express the speeches and sometimes the thoughts of the characters; in this case the thoughts of the narrator and those of the protagonists converge, and it becomes very difficult to distinguish between narrator and character.
Analyzing the narrative function of the imperfect by connecting it with that of the distant past, we noticed that in the narration the two past tenses alternate and intertwine.
