المستخلص: The world has witnessed major changes in the last twenty five years, basically after the dissolution of the ex Soviet Union. Transformation occurred on the economic, social and political levels. In the meanwhile, the call for democracy by the United States has increased the form of soft power. However, such a policy as well as others taken by various nation states has led to dramatic violence and disputes everywhere. The initiative taken towards global peace started as far back as 1945, i.e. after WWII when the United Nations (UN) was established. The main purpose of the creation of the UN was to maintain peace and security to all parts of the globe. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to examine and analyze the role of media as used by the UN in promoting the culture of peace worldwide. This will be done with a special focus on the last ten to fifteen years. In other words, it's the intention of this paper to tackle measures taken by the UN and discover areas of success and others of failure. The importance of this study stems from the fact that the world today is in a state of war. Many countries are engaged in disputes, conflicts, revolutions and other forms of political and military unrest. Peace and security seem to be a far away utopian dream. Since conflicts, as believed, begin in the minds of men, then the main target is to get people to understand and appreciate global peace and security. The UN has for more than a decade, adopted the issue of spreading the culture of peace worldwide. Whether it has succeeded to do so, is a very important question. This study argues that although the UN has attempted to ensure global peace, it has been confronted by many obstacles to do so. In other words, in a world full of upheaval and unrest, it has been very difficult for the UN to achieve its aim. Therefore, the UN as the most important international organization has to use its means, especially the media, more effectively to promote the culture of peace and make the dream of international security come true.
