Numerous studies on the state of education before and during the French occupation confirm that Algeria had many schools and institutes that rivalled advanced cities before French entry in 1830. However, there was a noticeable deterioration since the French settlement of Algeria across various aspects. This study sheds light on the pre-colonial education reality, the conditions of educational institutions during the occupation, essential laws and decrees adopted by the French colonizers, the position of Algerian scholars towards French education, as well as the stance of the French authorities towards educating Algerians, and the outcomes of French educational policy in Algeria. |
