ولد العالم الموسوعي أحمد بن عبد الله القلقشندي في "قلقشندة"، والتي نسب إليها ونشأ فيها، وهو من أسرة محبة للعلم، وقد أخذ شيئا من العلوم الدينية في مرحلته الأولى من دراسته، ثم انتقل إلى مدينة الإسكندرية؛ إذ تلقى علومه وتتلمذ على يد كبار عصره وعلمائه في علوم الحديث، والفقه والتفسير فضلا عن شروحات كتب الصحاح. يعد العالم الموسوعي أحمد بن عبد الله القلقشندي من الذين اشتهروا بالعلم والأدب، كما واتصف بحسن الخلق والخلق، وما أعطاه الله β من العلم والحكمة، كما ويعد أحد جهابذة العلم والأدب، وقد برزت سمة القيادة في طبيعة شخصيته على ما أظهره من الحكمة والمعرفة، وقد تمتع بمنزلة علمية مميزة كان لها الأثر الكبير في حياته العملية؛ إذ تولى وظائف وعدة مناصب إدارية مرموقة في الدولة المملوكية، فضلا عن براعته في الكتابة والإنشاء والتي مهدت له سبيل الاضطلاع بمناصب إدارية مهمة، كما وتميز بمؤلفاته العديدة من الكتب في مختلف العلوم، فتنوعت كتبه كل منها حسب المنهج الذي اتبعه.
