شكلت حرفة صيد وتجارة اللؤلؤ الضلع الأساسي في اقتصاد سكان الخليج العربي والمهنة الأبرز في تلك البقعة في مرحلة ما قبل ظهور النفط، فقد كانت المعلم الاقتصادي والهوية الثقافية والاجتماعية للمنطقة، فامتلأت صفحة الخليج بأساطيل صيد اللؤلؤ، وأطلق أهل الخليج العربي على الفترة السابقة لظهور البترول مصطلح عصر اللؤلؤ، الأمر الذي يعطى لنا دلالة على أهمية اللؤلؤ كعصب الحياة بين سكان منطقة الخليج العربي صيد اللؤلؤ وتجارته شكلت عصب الاقتصاد الخليجي في مرحلة ما قبل النفط بل وأحد أوجه هويته الثقافية والمجتمعية وقبل ذلك الاقتصادية، وبالتالي فإن مجتمعات الخليج المنتجة للؤلؤ انفتحت علي دول العالم ومارست حالة اجتماعية واقتصادية ضمنت لهم دخل اقتصادي فضلاً عما يمكن وصفه بتفاعل الإنسان الخليجي مع بيئته فضلاً عن شغفه وعلاقته بالبحر لتشكل علاقته بصيد وإنتاج اللؤلؤ حالة استثنائية في تاريخ العالم العربي الحديث والجدير بالذكر فإن اللؤلؤ الطبيعي يشغل الجانب الأعظم من حياة أهالي الخليج، لذا فقد كان ظهور اللؤلؤ في هذه المنطقة نتيجة لعوامل طبيعية وبشرية وقد لعب تكوين الخليج الضحل وطبيعته الحارة دوراً مهماً في توفير بيئة صالحة لنمو أنقى درجات اللؤلؤ في العالم.
