شكلت منطقة أفريقيا الغربية عمق تاريخي وجغرافي للمغرب، قبل أن تصبح منطقة تحالفات بعد الاستقلال، سواء في إطار الكتلة التقدمية الموالية للاتحاد السوفياتي، أو الكتلة الفرنكوفونية بعد اعتراف المغرب باستقلال موريتانيا. لكن في ظل العولمة الاقتصادية، وبروز التكتلات الاقتصادية واحتدام التنافسية العالمية بين الأقطاب الاقتصادية عمد المغرب إلى تنويع الشركاء الاقتصاديين، عبر الاتفاقيات التجارية، واتفاقيات التبادل الحر لكن مع عودة المغرب إلى الاتحاد الأفريقي خلال يناير 2017، وتموقع المغرب كبوابة حيواستراتيجية نحو أفريقيا سيعمل على محاولة الاندماج الاقتصادي الإقليمي، وذلك عبر تقديم طلبه للانضمام إلى المجموعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا، بعد عدم دخول حيز التنفيذ الاتفاق المبرم مع الاتحاد الاقتصادي والنقدي الغرب أفريقيا، بالرغم أن المنطقة تعتبر الشريك الاقتصادي الأول للمغرب بأفريقيا، حيث بلغت نسبة المبادلات التجارية بين الشريكين % 43 من مجموع المبادلات مع أفريقيا سنة 2022، واستقطبت المنطقة 70 من الاستثمارات المغربية الموجهة نحو أفريقيا سنة 2021.
The west African region has constituted a historical and geographical depth for Morocco before becoming a zone of alliances after independence, whether within the framework of the progressive bloc aligned with the Soviet Union or the Francophone bloc following Morocco's recognition of Mauritania's independence. However, in light of economic globalization, the emergence of economic blocs, and the intensification of global competition among economic poles, Morocco has sought to diversify its economic partners through trade agreements and free trade agreements. With Morocco's return to the African Union in January 2017 and its positioning as a geostrategic gateway to Africa, the country is working to promote regional economic integration. This is reflected in its application for membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), following the non-implementation of the agreement concluded with the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The region is considered Morocco's primary economic partner in Africa, with trade exchanges between the two partners accounting for 43% of Morocco's total trade with Africa in 2022. Additionally, 70% of Moroccan investments directed towards Africa in 2021 were aimed at this region.
