المستخلص: Due to Sudan’s geo-strategic position as well as its significance in food and water issues related to the Arab World and Arab-African cultural interaction, this paper explores the effects of South Sudan’s independence on Sudanese national security, in particular, and pan-Arab security, in general. First, the separation in question has deprived Sudan from 90% of its oil reserves. Second, the newborn state has been a center of flagrant foreign, especially Israeli, intervention. Third, the South Sudanese government has become one of the main supporters of rebel movements in both Darfur in the west and other eastern areas of Sudan. The separation is an unprecedented step which may be used by rebel groups to call for the independence of other regions. In addition, a new state has become a member of the Nile basin, threatening the water interests of both Sudan and Egypt. In conclusion, awareness must be raised with regard to South Sudan’s significance from a national Sudanese security perspective. This necessitates planned, continuous efforts in a bid to avoid any tension between the two countries. If any war breaks out, Sudan may be subject to another collapse as well as foreign intervention menacing pan-Arab security.
