This paper attempts to analyze the potential for government decentralization to serve as the short and medium-term economic and social framework for accelerating the pace of reform, growth, minimization of corruption and institutional capacity building in Egypt. The paper begins with a review of relevant literature which outlines the key considerations, benefits and drawbacks for adopting types of decentralized government and administration models, including relevant country case studies, while exploring the literature pertaining to government decentralization in the 21st century. This paper reviews and identifies Egypt’s current and impending major achievements in governmental decentralization, milestones and decisions, as well as provide an overview of the nation’s governorates. Closing with an analysis of potential implications for adopting decentralized government strategies for Egypt given the current economic and territorial contexts. With a cross-country comparison aiming to obtain experiences from different parts of the world, from countries standing at varying stages of development.
