المستخلص: The paper aims at examining Christian icons in Egypt, particularly the Coptic icons of the Egyptian Orthodox Church, and the Greek Orthodox icons, particularly from the Monastery of St Catherine in Egypt. Icons probably started from early Christianity, at least as early as the 2nd century as they were mentioned by Tertullian (c. 160-220) and in Clement of Alexandria (c. 150-212). They were then spread by the 24th Pope Kirollos 1st who became Pope in 420. Vansleb the historian reported that there was an icon in the church of St Mark of Alexandria done by Luke the Prophet depicting Paul the Evangelist. Since Luke was known to be a good painter he is also said to have drawn the likeness of the Virgin Mary who is said to have been one of the prettiest girls of the tribes of Israel.
