المستخلص: Introduction: The type of heparin to administer for treating thrombotic problems during pregnancy has become a debatable medical question. For years unfractionated heparin (UFH) has been the drug of choice. However, low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) has been gaining favor. Currently, the decision of which drug to use has been left up to physician preference due to the limited number of clinical trials that have been conducted during pregnancy. Objectives: 1. General objectives - To evaluate the benefits of using LMWH in prophylaxis for post –partum CS in The Military Hospital among Sudanese patients. 2. Specific objectives - To investigate the appropriate use of LMWH. - To measure the ideal dose &duration of LMWH. - To investigate the clinical outcome after using LMWH. - To assess the awareness of doctors toward the use of the drug. - To ensure the safety profile of LMWH. Methodology: This was retrospective descriptive study carried for 64 patients from September 2014-December 2014 on inpatient medication file in The Military Hospital. Results: The dose of LMWH used were 3500 is used for 92.2% of the patients, 2000 is used for 3.1% of the patients and 4000 is used for 4.7% of the patients, the duration of treatment in which 46 patients (71.9%) was treated for 3 days, 16 patients (25%) treated for 5 days, one patient (1.6%) were treated for 7 days and one patient (1.6%) were treated for 42 days. Conclusion: The study shows that obstetrician & gynecologist have a poor awareness about the use of L.M.W.H in general starting from risk assessment of each patient as well as the dose & duration.
