يهدف البحث إلى إبراز مراحل تطور المنهج في الفكر الجغرافي الحديث والصعوبات التي واجهت المفكرين الجغرافيين خلالها، فلقد صيغت الخطوط والقواعد الأساسية للجغرافيا خلال الفترة الحديثة، لذا ولأجل وضع الأسس والقواعد التي توضح للجغرافيين مجال بحثهم ولأجل تبين المواضيع الجغرافية من غيرها فقد شهد منهج البحث الجغرافي محاولات عديدة ومر بمراحل زمنية متمايزة عن بعضها، ولابد من الإشادة في هذا المجال بإسهامات كل من همبولت وريتر في تحديد أطر الفكر الجغرافي والمعرفة الجغرافية، وخلصت الدراسة إلى مجموعة من الاستنتاجات أهمها ظهور المدارس الجغرافية والتعاريف المتعددة لهذا العلم من قبيل أن الجغرافيا (علم العلاقات المكانية) أو أنه (علم التوزيعات) أو كونه (علم التباين المكاني) وغيرها من التعاريف، وأن موضوع الجغرافيا يحدد بوسيلتين اعتمدتا كأساس لإعطاء المعونة في عملية التحديد هما الحيز (المكان) والوحدة (الحجم) كما ويتميز المنهج الجغرافي عن المناهج العلمية الأخرى من خلال اهتمامه بالامتداد المكاني للظواهر (الأفقي والعمودي) والامتداد الزماني وبإعطاء الأولوية للأهمية النسبية للموضوع وإن الجغرافيا حققت تقدما كبيرا إثر حركة الكشوف الجغرافية كما وتبين بأنه لا يمكن للجغرافية اتباع منهج واحد أو وسيلة معينة في كل فروعها الطبيعية والبشرية. وقد أمكن التوصل إلى صياغة القوانين في الجغرافية الطبيعية، بينما كانت التعميمات أفضل ما تم التوصل إليه في الجغرافيا البشرية لصعوبة إخضاع السلوك البشري لقوانين.
