This thesis assesses the impact of transnational civil and political rights advocacy in Saudi Arabia. In doing so, it applies the spiral model developed by Risse et al. The model seeks to clarify the impacts of the transnational rights network on states (in this case Saudi Arabia). It also explores the extent to which Saudi Arabia is acting in accordance with international norms. For the purpose of evaluating effectiveness, the study uses a set definition of civil rights, focused on political rights, the rights to freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention, freedom of opinion and expression, and women’s rights. The thesis assesses the efficacy of the five-phase spiral model as an explanation of the changes in the Saudi government’s civil and political rights from the early 1990s to the end of 2011. It explores the reactions of the Saudi government to internal and external responses, in order to ascertain whether such rights groups have had any impact on civil rights practices in Saudi Arabia over this time period. |
