المستخلص: Maintenance management is a complex process due to the large number of inputs affecting directly or indirectly the output performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the performance of the vehicles' maintenance management system at a government department in Saudi Arabia. This study adopted a qualitative methodology that was based on five interviews with managers at different levels. The result shows that the maintenance strategies and approaches applied at the department were not effective; also, the absence of an efficient vehicle replacement policy associated with a lack of outsourcing maintenance operations above the organisation capability negatively impacted on the maintenance management system performance. The study highlighted the need for essential changes in the vehicles maintenance system to be more efficient and reliable. Recommendations were made to enhance performance significantly from the current situation.
