المستخلص: The discussion about the issue of abrogation in both Qur’ān and the sunnah has occupied a vast space in the classical and contemporary discourse. A great deal of debate has been generated by this topic. In the sphere of hadīth, this issue forms an important and challenging part of the academic discussion. An acute awareness of this discussion has been found essential to resolve the differences between various reports. Many important works came to the fore in the past dealing with this intricate subject. However, most of these works did not come down to us. The extant works from the early period that are accessible now are the following: 1. Abū Bakr al-Athram (d.261AH) Nāsikh al-Hadīth wa Mansūkhuh; 2. Ibn Shahin, (d. 385AH) Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhuh; 3. Imam al-Hazimi (d. 584AH) Al-I‘tibar fi al-Nasikh wa al- Mansukh fi al-Hadith; 4. Imam Ibn al-Jawzi (d.597AH), I'lam al-‘Alim ba‘da Rusukhihi bi Haqa’iq Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhih; and: 5. Imam al-Ja‘bari, (d. 732AH) Rusukh al-Ahbar fi Mansukh al-Akhbar. This paper sheds light on the above works and attempts to resolve the differences between their authors about the possibility of abrogation in various ahadith.
