المستخلص: Architectural competitions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have become one of the main ways to reach distinctive architectural solutions. It has resulted in a number of buildings and projects that have become an architectural landmark referred to locally and internationally. Architectural competitions have a significant role in promoting the profession as they encourage participants to come up with ideas that are out of the ordinary and encourage competition in order to reach the perfect solution. They also have an influential role in discovering new talents and highlighting professional offices in their designs that were not previously known.
Despite the importance of architectural competitions, the manner in which they are organized in the Kingdom has been criticized by those who are interested in them. Some criticized the results of the competitions, another criticized the way they were judged, and a third criticized their awards and poor financial returns. Finally, there are some people who believe that few architectural competitions are being held in the Kingdom. Therefore, this research seeks to study these opinions: criticisms and viewpoints, and to confirm or deny the negative view towards them. In addition, the organizers and owners are aware of the main shortcomings and criticisms leveled against them in an effort to avoid them in the future, and highlight the aspects that were absent from their minds. The research also seeks to find out the extent of the participation of practitioners in the Kingdom and their involvement in the field of architectural competitions.
A questionnaire was designed for this task, its design was the result of a number of stages, including the study of literature, the interview of specialists, the design of a pilot survey and the final form, which was distributed to 258 individuals. The largest percentage of them have never participated in any competition, they attributed the main reason to the lack of the number of competitions organized in the Kingdom, and if any, their media coverage is very weak. Their general impression of architectural competition activity in Saudi Arabia was “bad”, and when their view was measured in greater detail, the “neutral” view was the most widely used option.

أصبحت المسابقات المعمارية في المملكة العربية السعودية إحدى الوسائل الرئيسية التي يتم اللجوء إليها للوصول إلى الحلول المعمارية المميزة. وقد نتج عنها عدد من المباني والمشاريع التي أصبحت معلماً معمارياً يشار إليه بالبنان محلياً وعالمياً. وللمسابقات المعمارية دور كبير في الارتقاء بالمهنة؛ نتيجة تشجيعها على خروج المشاركين بأفكار خارجة عن المألوف وتشجع على التنافس بهدف الوصول إلى الحل الأمثل، كما أن لها دوراً مؤثراً في اكتشاف المواهب الجديدة وتسليط الضوء على المكاتب المهنية المميزة في تصاميمها والتي لم تكن معروفة مسبقاً.
وعلى الرغم من أهمية المسابقات المعمارية فإن أسلوب تنظيمها في المملكة صاحبه العديد من الانتقادات من قبل المنخرطين والمهتمين بها. فهناك من انتقد النتائج التي تسفر عنها المسابقات، وآخر انتقد طريقة تحكيمها، وثالث انتقد جوائزها ومردودها المادي الضعيف. وأخيراً هناك من يرى أن عدد المسابقات المعمارية التي يتم تنظيمها في المملكة قليل. لذلك فإن هذا البحث يسعى إلى دراسة تلك الآراء: الانتقادات ووجهات النظر، وتأكيد النظرة السلبية تجاهها أو نفيها. بالإضافة إلى تعرف أهم السلبيات والانتقادات الموجهة لها سعياً لتجنبها مستقبلاً من قبل المنظمين والملاك، وتسليط الضوء على النواحي التي كانت غائبة عن أذهانهم. كما يسعى البحث إلى معرفة مدى مشاركة ممارسي المهنة في المملكة وانخراطهم في مجال المسابقات المعمارية.
صممت استبانة لتلك المهمة، وكان تصميمها نتيجة عدد من المراحل شملت دراسة الأدبيات، ومقابلة المختصين، وتصميم استبانة استطلاعية Pilot Survey، وصولاً إلى الشكل النهائي، تم توزيعها على 258 مستباناً. كانت النسبة الكبرى منهم لم يسبق لهم المشاركة بأي مسابقة، وعزوا السبب الرئيسي في ذلك إلى قلة عدد المسابقات التي تنظم في المملكة، وإن وجدت فإن تغطيتها الإعلامية تكون ضعيفة جداً. وكان انطباعهم العام عن نشاط المسابقات المعمارية في المملكة العربية السعودية أنه "سيء"، وعند قياس وجهة نظرهم بصورة تفصيلية أكبر كانت وجهة النظر "المحايدة" هي الخيار الأكثر استخداماً.
