Dimethoate is an organophosphate insecticide that is used for eradication of agricultural pests. This study was done to evaluate the impact of dimethoate on reproductive performance of adult male mice. 27 Swiss albino adult male mice were divided into three groups of 9 animals each: control group received distilled water only, while other treated groups received dimethoate orally at doses (0.1 and 0.2 ml dimethoate / 100 ml distilled water) for 20 days, after the last treatment dose, the mice were sacrificed. The body, testis and epididymis weights were recorded, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm morphology were evaluated. The results revealed a decrease in the weight of testis and epididymis in treated groups treated compared with control group. The results also showed a significant decrease in sperm motility and an increase in abnormal sperm morphology, while sperm count did not show any differences. In addition, there was a significant decrease in the mean number of live embryos and a significant increase in the mean number of dead embryos of females mated with dimethoate treated males as compared to control. Moreover, dimethoate caused a significant decrease in the body weight of embryos. It is conclude that dimethoate has toxic effect on reproductive function of male mice and reproductive performances of female mice. Therefore, more efforts should be exerted to overcome the problem of food contaminated with the organophosphorus compounds to protect our health and environment from the seriously harmful effects of such compounds.
