المستخلص: لم يحظ تاريخ وعمارة جوامع ومساجد مدينة جدة بالاهتمام الكاف سواء من قبل المؤرخين، أو من قبل الرحالة الذين زاروا ودونوا ملاحظاتهم عن عمرانها ومبانيها، حتى أن كتابات المؤرخين المحدثين لم تشف غليل الباحثين عن تاريخ وعمارة تلك المباني المهمة، لا سيما إذا ما وضعنا في اعتبارنا حقيقة مهمة وهي أن هذه المساجد، تمت عليها مجموعة من التعميرات والترميمات على فترات زمنية مختلفة لم يوثق أغلبها بشكل دقيق، مما جعل البحث فيها من الأمور الصعبة والتي تتطلب ضرورة دراستها في إطارها الزمني، والمكاني، ومقارنتها بمثيلاتها المعاصرة، والسابقة عليها، للوصول إلى أقرب تصور عن عمارتها، وما كانت عليه وقت إنشائها. ويهتم هذا البحث بدراسة مسجد الحنفي ومقصورة باناجه الملحقة به "دراسة تاريخية حضارية"، وبيان أهمية المسجد في عمران مدينة جدة على مر العصور، ودراسة وتحديد موقعه قديما وحديثاً، وتسميته الأصلية، وتاريخ بنائه، ومنشئه، وأهم التعميرات والإضافات التي تمت على المسجد عبر العصور التاريخية منذ إنشائه وحتى اليوم، وكذلك عمارة المسجد وأهم مكوناته المعمارية ووحداته المعمارية ومنها مصلى الملك عبدالعزيز الملحق به، وكذلك ما يضمه من عناصر فنية، وينفرد البحث بنشر مجموعة من الوثائق العثمانية الخاصة بالمسجد لأول مرة.
