إن من العلوم ما ترتبط وتتكامل، ومنها ما تتفرع منها علوم أخرى كذلك علم المورفولوجي وهو دراسة شكل الشيء وبنيته، وكلمة Morph تعني شكل أو مقطع، يدخل المورفولوجي في الكثير من العلوم بنفس المصطلح والمعنى، كعلم اللغويات وعلم الاحياء وعلم الجيولوجيا وعلم الحوسبة وكذلك علم الزخرفة. هو من العلوم المنبثقة من علم التصميم الزخرفي وله اختصاصاته وأهدافه. يعني التشكل الأسلوبي، وهو يستند لقواعد وأساليب تصميمية لإنتاج التصميم بقواعد منهجية وعلمية صحيحة. تبدأ بالاستلهام من الطبيعة وتختص مورفولوجيا الزخرفة النباتية بالبحث في أشكال النباتات الطبيعية لذلك فهي تقوم على الارتباط بين مورفولوجيا الزخرفة ومورفولوجيا النبات والمختص بدراسة شكل النبات وتركيب أجزائه، حيث يتم الاستلهام من الطبيعة المورفولوجية للنبات وتحويله إلى تصميم تطبيقي، كما فعلت الحضارات القديمة فقد استعانت الفنون المصرية القديمة بمورفولوجيا الزخرفة النباتية وقدمت طرزا خاصة من خلال التصميمات النباتية البيئية، استخدمت في تجميل المعابد والمقابر، كما تنوعت التصميمات النباتية في الفنون الاسلامية، وأبدعت زخارف التوريق كأسلوب تصميمي فريد في تصميم العناصر الزخرفية النباتية. يختص مورفولوجيا الزخرفة النباتية بتصميم العنصر الزخرفي، ومن ثم التصميم العام بواسطة الاساليب التصميمية، ثم مراحل التنفيذ لأي من المشروعات التطبيقية. يهدف مورفولوجيا الزخرفة النباتية لإنتاج تصميمات تطبيقية معاصرة ومشروعات مرتبطة بالعمارة والعمارة الداخلية كالأسوار والفتحات المعمارية والقواطيع والوحدات الديكورية.
