|b Some jurists often use the term "environmental terrorism" and the term "eco- terrorism" as synonyms to refer to one of the forms of terrorist crimes associated with the environment, while other jurists use this two words to denote two different phenomena, the first one is used to describe: the acts of violence or attacks on persons or property using an element of the natural environment as a weapon or a direct attack against a natural resource in order to instill horror in a human target, while the second one indicates: terrorism associated with extremist groups active in the field of environmental protection and animal rights, in which the use or threat of violence is used illegally against innocent victims or property by an ecologically oriented group for political and environmental reasons.

|a كثيرا ما يلجا بعض فقهاء القانون لاستعمال مصطلح الإرهاب البيئي ومصطلح الإرهاب الإيكولوجي كمترادفين للدلالة على صورة واحدة من صور الجرائم الإرهابية المرتبطة بالبيئة، في حين أن فقهاء آخرين يستعملان اللفظين للدلالة على ظاهرتين مختلفتين، الأولى: تتمثل في أفعال عنف أو هجوم على أشخاص أو ممتلكات باستخدام عنصر من عناصر البيئة الطبيعية كسلاح أو هجوم مباشر ضد مورد طبيعي من أجل غرس الخوف في هدف بشري، بينما الثاني يدل على: الإرهاب المرتبط بجماعات متطرفة ناشطة في مجال الدفاع عن البيئة وعن حقوق الحيوان، يتم فيه استخدام أو التهديد باستخدام العنف بصورة إجرامية ضد ضحايا أبرياء أو الممتلكات من قبل مجموعة ذات توجه إيكولوجي لأسباب سياسية وبيئية.
