This study discussed the effects that occur due to the use of social media sites and their impact on personal traits. Although the use of social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, the social effects of their use and their impact on individual satisfaction with life are not known. The study sample included 583 young people (236 males and 346 females). The study employed a questionnaire covering three themes related to personal data, the nature of the use of social media sites, and the social implications of using social media sites.
The study targeted testing four major hypotheses. The results indicated acceptance of the first assumption that the variable “social media usage rate” adversely affects the level of satisfaction with life and strong acceptance of the second assumption that the “rate of use of social media sites” affects the degree of association with them. The results also indicated the acceptance of the third assumption that the variable “complacency” is linked to the rate of satisfaction with life, as a strong correlation has been found there. In the fourth test, demographic variables were only influential in limited cases of social media motives.
The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between males and females in the social media association rate. Ritualistic motives were at the forefront of the motives for using social media sites, especially the motive of spending time followed by utilitarian motives such as gaining new friendships.
