This paper discusses the concept of qarīnah (clue) and its definitions, lexically and contextually. There are several linguistic definitions of qarīnah, so I opted for the most relevant one to this study. The paper broaches the following issues: the kinds of clues; the importance of the topic and the reason for choosing it; the previous studies; and the main concern of the paper and its methodology. To facilitate the accessibility of the study, I divided it into to three sections and a conclusion: The first section is entitled, “The relationship between qarīnah and ‛ilal (weakness). It falls into several subsections. The first subsection presents the concept of ‛ilal, lexically and contextually, the second section is about the significance of clues, whereas the third explores the benefits of clues in giving knowledge. The second section is entitled, “The Role of Qarīnah in Uncovering ‛Ilal,” and it falls into several subsections as well. The first mentions the clues that expose falsehood, whereas the second is about the role of clues in outweighing waṣl (continuation) or ᾿irsāl (sending). The third subsection covers the role of clues in outweighing raf‛ (connection) or waqf (lack of connection). The fourth subsection deals with Hadiths narrated in the form of ‛an anah (a chain of narrators) and its connection to clues. The fifth subsection is about the role of clues in giving preference to a controversial narrator. The third section is entitled, “The Relation between Qarīnah and Isnād (authentication),” which also contains several subsections. The first subsection is on the role of clues in discerning muhmal (unknown) narrators, the second is on their roles in defining those agreeing in first and second names. The third subsection tackles the terminology of taḩammul (bearing the responsibility of narration) in its relation to clues. Finally, the study touches upon determining a stance when clues vary and are apparently contradictory, and when a narrator disagrees with the narration. The paper concludes with the major findings, as well as a bibliography of works cited.
