المستخلص: In the past decades, the GCC countries have suffered from water scarcity problems as a result of the climate nature and the geografic location, and the significant increase in water demand in the region. What made them resort to desalination to cope with this crisis. This technology has developed rapidly in the region ; therefore, it occupied advanced ranks worldwide, yet this technology still faces many challenges ; the most important of which are environmental challenges. This study aimed to highlight the role of desalination in achieving water security in the region, but without compromising the natural environment. The analytical descriptive method had been relied upon, and a series of results had been reached. The most important of which was that the States of the region were obliged to face environmental challenges to achieve water security on one hand and sustainable development on the other hand, through the adoption of regulations as well as the use of cleaner technology such as reliance on renewable energies and the use of best suited methods for the disposal of the brine.
