نظراً لما تحتويه مدينة النجف الكبرى من أهمية مكانية واقتصادية وسياحية واجتماعية متحركة الديناميكية مقابل عدم كفاية وكفاءة شبكة النقل الحضري فيها للحركة والمسببة للكثير من المشكلات المرورية ولاسيما خلال مواسم الزيارات الدينية الكبرى، ونظراً لعدم وجود فاعلية واضحة المعالم واستراتيجية لمعالجة مشكلات النقل الحضري، فإن هذا دفع الباحث إلى ضرورة دراسة منظومة النقل الحضري في مدينة النجف الكبرى ووضع استراتيجية آنية ومستقبلية لمعالجة مشكلاتها وذلك من خلال دراسة تصميم شبكة مترو للنقل الحضري فيها، وهو مشروع استراتيجي ناجح متبع في اغلب دول العالم المتقدم والنامي نظراً لما يحققه من مكاسب أمنية وبيئية وواردات اقتصادية فضلاً عن المعالجة والتقليل من مشكلات النقل الحضري سواء على المدى القريب أو البعيد، وهذا جاء بناءً على أهم النتائج التي توصل والمتمثلة بخلو التصميم الأساس الحالي لمدينة النجف الكبرى من هيكلية واضحة مفعلة للنقل الحضري وهذا ما يشكل مثلبة كبيرة في هذا التصميم الحالي للمدينة. وعدم وجود فاعلية واضحة للنقل الحضري الجماعي العام في مدينة النجف الكبرى وهذا ما يعد سبباً بعدم الاهتمام بوظيفة النقل واستراتيجيته الوظيفية. فضلاً عن ان لعدم الاهتمام بتخطيط النقل الحضري ودراساته في مدينة النجف الكبرى أثراً سلبياً في جعل شبكة النقل الحضري تعاني من ارتفاع واضح لمعدلات مشكلات النقل والمرور التي يأتي في مقدمتها مشكلة الاختناقات المرورية والحوادث المرورية والتلوث البيئي.
