The MESC and the Jordanian Political Science Association held a joint symposium titled Options to Face the Deal of the Century. It was attended by distinguished Jordanian, Palestinian and other Arab specialists. Session One, chaired by Dr Mohammad Al-Qatatsha, Dean of the Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II School of International Studies at the University of Jordan, discussed the content and repercussions of the Deal of the Century. The speakers were Dr Waleed Abdul-Hai, Professor of International Relations at Yarmouk University; former minister Dr Ameen Mashaqba, Professor of International Relations at the University of Jordan; and Jawad Al-Hamad, MESC’s Director General. Session One, chaired by Dr Ahmed Saieed Nofal, Professor of Political Science, explored the Palestinian and Jordanian options to face the plan. The speakers were Dr Ayman Yousef, Professor of Political Science at the Arab American University of Palestine; Atef Al-Jolani, writer and political analyst; Dr Hassan Al-Momani, Professor of International Relations at the University of Jordan; Eng. Abdul-Hadi Al-Falahat, Head of the Agricultural Engineers Association; and Jameel Al-Nemri, former PM and Secretary- General of the Jordanian Social Democratic Party. The participants presented several thoughts and discussed different matters at the sidelines of the event. For instance, the plan constitutes a fundamental challenge to the Palestinian, Jordanian and Arab stands within the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict. As the implementation of the scheme would settle the issue in favour of Israel but not solve it, the Palestinian cause will be liquidated at the expense of the security of Jordan, in particular, and the pan-Arab security, in general. Finally, the participants agreed that, even if the Israelis and Americans impose unilateral steps without the Palestinian consent, the rejection of the plan by the Palestinians is likely to make it a failure. The outcome is not more than conflict management within the balance of the current powers. Furthermore, the best response on the Palestinian front is to achieve national unity and agree on the national project, which would support the Palestinians in countering this plan.
