The theatre of the absurd appeared as a result of political global circumstances, which led modern thinkers to re-consider the reality and coherence of human existence and a new disillusioned generation appeared throughout Europe, America, and the whole world. The absurdists are young men of literature affected by two world wars that created in them a sense of alienation and lack of communication. Despite its appearance in the 50s of the previous century, the theatre of the absurd remains the most controversial dramatic form as a revolt against all traditional theatrical forms. It also succeeded in building a cultural bridge between the west and the Arab world. A number of prominent Egyptian writers were greatly influence by the ideas and technique of the theatre of the absurd, like Salah Abdel Sabour (1931-1981) in his most absurd play Mosaffer Leel (Night Traveler) 1969, Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) in his symbolic absurd short story Thaht Al-Mazala (Under the Umbrella) 1969, and Tawfik Al-Hakim (1898-1987), whose most outstanding attempt that introduced the theatre of the absurd to the Arab reader is Ya Talee al Shagarah (The Tree Climber) 1962. The idea of the play is derived from an Egyptian folklore song that carries the same title. Al-Hakim believed that the song is meaningless and illogical, although the song is commonly regarded as symbolic: the tree climber is a symbol of a rich man who is asked by a poor person to grant him a cow in order to drink its milk. Through the style of Al-Hakim’s play, the illogical is combined with the symbolic. |
