يتناول البحث دراسة كتب السنة وبيان أهميتها، وتعدادها، ودراسة أشهرها، حيث عرض لأهمية كتب السنة لكونها مصدراً مهماً للأحاديث والآثار ولما تحويه من فقه السلف للأحاديث والآثار في بابها، وتكون البحث من تمهيد وفصلين، تضمن التمهيد معنى السنة لغة واصطلاحا، وأشهر كتب السنة، وتناول الفصل الأول: الكتب المصنفة باسم السنة، أو نحوه كأصول السنة، بينما تناول الفصل الثاني: دراسة لأشهر كتب السنة، وتبين من خلال البحث كثرة المصنفات في السنة مطولة ومختصرة، وقلة المطبوع منها، كما ظهر جلياً مدى عناية العلماء المتأخرين بهذه الكتب ونقلهم منها، مما يؤكد عناية السلف بحماية الدين والرد على من يحدث فيه.‏
