في تاريخ العلاقة بين القبائل الليبية القديمة، وبين مصر الفرعونية، ثمة علامات استفهام كبيرة لم نجد لها حلاً حتى هذه اللحظة، إلا أن غياب الشواهد التاريخية لا يحول دون أن نتمعن في التاريخ بدلاً من قراءته بعجالة، وأن نتأمل في ما وراء الأحداث التاريخية بدلاً من مجرد العبور السريع على سطورها وأرقامها وتواريخها. إن للمصادر المصرية القديمة فضلاً كبيراً على التاريخ الليبي من ناحية أنها وفرت لنا معلومات قيمة ومهمة عن القبائل الليبية التي عاصرت عهد ما قبل قيام الدولة المصرية ثم العهود اللاحقة له، فقد صورت لنا كل ما يمكن معرفته عن أزيائهم وملامحهم، وأخبرتنا عن مواقعهم ومواطنهم الأصلية، وسردت علينا بعضاً من أنظمة معيشتهم وأحوالهم الاجتماعية وديانتهم ومعتقداتهم. ورغم هذا الجهد الكبير الذي نذكره فنمعن في شكره وتقديره، فإن هذه المصادر عندما تحدثت عن الاحتكاك والتصادم بين الطرفين، قدمت لنا معلومات قد تبدوا متناقضة في بعضها، أو متسرعة في سطورها، أو ربما صادقةً في بيانها أحياناً، أو مجافية لمنطق الأشياء في بعض الأحيان. هذه الحالات المتباينة، شكلت مع تكرارها علامات استفهام كبيرة صبغت العلاقة بين القبائل الليبية والدولة المصرية القديمة، تمحورت حول الأصل والمنشأ والانتماء حيناً، كما هو الحال بالنسبة إلى قبيلة "التحنو"، كما تركزت في أحيانٍ أخرى حول مصداقية ما ورد بخصوص الأسباب الحقيقية التي دفعت بهذه القبائل إلى الحدود المصرية، كما هو الحال بالنسبة إلى قبيلتي "الليبو"و "المشواش". وفي كل حال، فإننا لا نملك من الشواهد التاريخية ما يسمح لنا بالحكم قطعياً على أي من علامات الاستفهام الواردة في هذا البحث المتواضع، لكننا نطرح هنا علامات الاستفهام هذه، ونحاول تحليل بعض ما ورد في هذه المصادر، لعلنا نخطو خطوة صغيرة على دربٍ طويل لم تتبين معالمه الحقيقية بعد.
