السياق هو جميع القرائن اللفظية والحالية التي تساهم في فهم اللفظ أو النص، ويحتل السياق أهمية كبرى في بيان دلالات الألفاظ، وتحديد معنى الكلمة أو الكلمات، وإزالة الغموض والكشف عن المعنى المراد في الألفاظ التي لا تعرف دلالالتها ولا تتضح إلا من خلال السياق، كما أن الغفلة عن النظر في السياق وأخذ الألفاظ منفردة عن سياقها يؤدي إلى الخطأ في فهم الخطاب كله أو بعضه؛ إذ أن معنى الكلمة يتحدد وفق الكمات التي ترد في النص أو الخطاب ووفق الملابسات الحالية المحيطة بالكلمة أو النص. وقرائن السياق تنقسم إلى قرائن لفظية وقرائن حالية، وتنقسم اللفظية إلى قرائن متصلة وقرائن منفصلة، وتنقسم الحالية إلى قرائن مقترنة بالخطاب وقرائن منفصلة عن الخطاب. وللقرائن السياقية أثرها في توجيه دلالة الأمر ودلالة النهي، وتقييد المطلق وتخصيص العام، وتحديد دلالة المشترك، وحمل اللفظ على المجاز، وبيان درجة الوضوح في اللفظ، ورفع الإبهام والخفاء في معاني الألفاظ، وبيان طرق دلالة اللفظ على معناه في كونه دل على ذلك بدلالة العبارة أو بدلالة الإشارة أو بدلالة النص.
Context is all verbal relations and circumstancial evidences which help understanding the word or text. Context greatly contributes to illustration of the significance of vocabulary and definitions of word or words, removal of obscurity and revealing the intended meaning of words that remain unclear except through context. As negligence or heedlessness of looking into context and separation of words from their context leads to mistakes in understanding of address fully or partly, as the meaning is defined according to words which are mentioned in the text and according to circumstances surrounding the word or context. Relations of context are divided into verbal relations and circumstantial associations. Verbal relations, by the way, are also divided into connected and disconnected relations and so are circumstantial relations divided into context connected or disconnected from the context. Context relations have their impact on guiding significance of order or prohibition. They have also impact restricting the absolute and specializing the general and defining the significance of the common. It also helps to show if the word has figurative or real meaning as it also shows the degree of clarity of the work and removal of obscurity and hidden meanings of words. It also helps clarifying ways of showing significance of words by sentence or by sign or by context.
