المستخلص: تشكل ازدواجية التصنيف الثقافي في الباليوليتي الأوسط إحدى أهم الإشكاليات التي شغلت الباحثين حول هذه الفترة في شمال إفريقيا منذ قرن من الزمن. يتطرق هذا المقال إلى نشأة التصنيف المزدوج لصناعات الباليوليتي الأوسط وكيف أصبحت ظاهرة تعنيق الأدوات معيارا لفصل المجموعات الصناعية بين موستيرية وعاترية. كما يعرض مختلف الأدلة الصناعية والستراتغرافية والكرونولوجية والانتروبولوجية التي اعتمد عليها النقاش حول هذه الإشكالية وكيف ساهمت هذه الدلائل في تحول فرضيات البحث من أطروحة المسار التطوري الخطي للمركبات الصناعية من الموستيري إلى العاتري بمختلف تقسيماته إلى واقع التغيرية الثقافية للباليوليتي الأوسط بشمال إفريقيا والعوامل المفسرة له.

Research on Middle Palaeolithic cultures in North Africa has been dominated for nearly a century by the question of the identity of the Aterian culture and the nature of its relationship with the Mousterian. This issue was based on the observation of specific North African components in the material culture of the Middle Paleolithic industries. This article examines the debate according to the archaeological, stratigraphic, chronological, and anthropological evidence that contributed to the shift of the research hypotheses from the thesis of linear evolutionary path of industries from Mousterian to Aterian with its various divisions to the idea of a great variability inside the North African Middle Palaeolithic industries.

L’étude des cultures du paléolithique moyen d’Afrique du nord a été dominée pendant près d’un siècle par la question de l’identité de l’Atérien et la nature de sa relation avec le Moustérien. Cet article examine la problématique, née de l’évidence de la présence de composantes spécifiques à l’Afrique du Nord dans les industries paléolithiques. Il présente également les arguments archéologiques, stratigraphiques, chronologiques et anthropologiques qui ont contribué au passage d’un eapproche évolutive linéaire allant du Moustérien à l’Atérien et ses différentes phases à l’idée d’unevariabilité plus large des complexes industriels du Paléolithique moyen Nord-Africain.
