1-The total population is 94.799 million in 2017, 40.240 million in urban areas and 54.558 million in rural areas. 2-The percentage of the urban population increased between (2006 - 2017). It reached 42.5% in 1996, then rose to 43.1% in 2006 and fell slightly to 42.4% in 2017. 3- There is an urban extension in some governorates of the Republic between the three censuses, where the proportion of urban population in the Red Sea Governorate was 74.4% in the 1996 census and increased to 96.5% in the 2017 census. 4- Some governorates have experienced an urban contraction between the three censuses. The percentage of the urban population in Ismailia reached 50.3% in the 1996 census and decreased to 44.5% in the 2017 census. Most of the governorates have the lowest percentage of the urban population with values of 2-3 percentage points. 5-The total growth rate of the urban population was 2.16% between the census (1996-2006) and the rate increased to 2.46% between the census (2006-2017). 6- There are provinces with an increase in the rate of urban growth between the three censuses such as Luxor and Fayoum, and some provinces decreased growth rate, such as the Red Sea and South Sinai. 7-The percentage of urban population in the age group (0-9 years) increased from 18.9% in 2006 to 21.9% in 2017. In the age group (20-29 years), it decreased from 20.0% in 2006 to 17.7% in 2017. 8-The illiteracy rate of the urban population decreased in 2017 to 17.7% compared to the rate of 20.4% in 2006. 9- The percentage of illiterate and rural literate is higher than that of urban areas. In contrast, there is a clear rise in the proportion of qualifications, whether medium or high, in urban areas. 10- Most governorates of migration of Cairo governorate in the census of 2006 is Menoufia Governorate 8.6% of the total emigrants to Cairo governorate followed by Assiut 8%. In the 2017 census and more immigrants to Cairo from Alexandria governorate, 13.6% of the total migrants are to Cairo Followed by Sharkia 9.4%. 11- The percentage of immigrants to the Greater Cairo governorates increased from 55.5% of the total migrants in the Arab Republic of Egypt in the 2006 census to 64.5% in the 2017 census.
