|b Divorce is considered a real social problem in all societies, because it has serious effects that threaten the family, which is the basic component of society. The focus in this study tends to monitor the development of the divorce phenomenon in society by reading its statistical indicators from 1966 to 2018 and analyzing the implications of its development. The study aims to measure the prevalence of divorce in Egypt, identify differences in the levels of the phenomenon across the governorates, study the social, economic and demographic characteristics of divorced women and identify the patterns and trends of divorce according to the recorded administrative data of divorce certificates, and to also measure the levels of divorce according to the variables related to the nature of divorce, and determine the causes of divorce in accordance with the provisions of divorce issued by the courts. The study is based on the data of the public censuses of population, housing and establishments since 1966, and the annual marriage and divorce bulletins issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) during the last decade (2009 - 2018). The study concluded the following: 1- The phenomenon of divorce represents 1.25% of the population aged 18 years and above according to the 2017 census, which is the highest rate ever, for more than half a century (study period). 2- Revised divorce rates in rural areas are lower than in urban areas (1.2% versus 2.6%, respectively), and those rates are also higher in urban governorates (Cairo, Port Said, Suez, Alexandria respectively), both at the overall level or at the level of males and females, while it is noted that the rural of lower Egypt represents the most socially stable region, especially in the governorate of Beheira. 3- The rate of change in the revised divorce rates at the total level of Egypt between 2006 and 2017 reached 48.4%, which represents nearly half. 4- The rate of change in the revised divorce rates has increased between 2006 and 2017 at the level of all Egyptian governorates except for the governorates of Qena and North Sinai only. 5- The highest rates of divorce certificates are between divorced women with a similar educational level, or the divorced male is more educated than the divorced woman. 6- There is an inverse correlation between the length of the marital life and the ratios of divorce certificates, meaning that the longer the marital life period, the lower the divorce rates. 7- Most divorce certificates are minor irrevocable divorce with a percentage of (82%). 8- Most divorce rulings in 2018 were committed by abdicative divorce (about 84%), and this may be due to the overcrowding of courts in such cases and while the judges are keen to give reconciliation opportunities and verify the true dimensions of the problem, which often arise in closed rooms, it is difficult to provide witnesses. Therefore, cases in the courts may last for years, which causes many divorced women to ask for divorce by way of abdication as a quick solution to complete and practice their lives almost naturally. 9- The results of the study confirm the eligibility and relevance of recorded data of marriage and divorce as a main source of the analytical studies.
