المستخلص: تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تتبع إحدى الوظائف الفرعية والمساعدة التي أسهمت بدورها في قيام البريد بالمهام الموكلة إليه، وهي وظيفة الفيوج والبحث عن حقيقة وضعه وما طرأ عليه من تغيرات بدءا من العصر الجاهلي وحتى العصر الأموي، وكذلك في العصر العباسي وحتى نهاية القرن الرابع الهجري، وهناك صعوبات كثيرة تواجه من أراد البحث في معرفة ما يتعلق بتلك الوظيفة نظراً لقلة الوثائق والمعلومات المتوفرة ليس فقط على المستوى الاجتماعي بل وكذلك ما يرتبط بالجوانب الاقتصادية والثقافية والعمرانية. ومن الحقائق التي لا يرقى إليها الشك أن وضع الفيوج كان ضعيفا في الخريطة الاجتماعية وارتبط بالنشاط الإداري والعسكري والاقتصادي كما أن أغلب المنتمين لهذه الوظيفة كانوا بعيدين عن التأثيرات الفكرية والثقافية فضلا عن صمتهم التاريخي، حيث لم يقوموا برد فعل يلفت أنظار المعاصرين إليهم، ولم يتركوا أثرا يمكن من خلاله دراسة أحوالهم الخاصة ورصد تفاعلاتهم مع طبقات المجتمع المختلفة، فكانت هذه الأسباب كفيلة بجعلهم بعيدين عن اهتمامات المؤرخين والكتاب، فلم يشيروا إليه في مؤلفاتهم إلا بإشارات قليلة لا تتناسب مع قيمة أدواره المذكورة. لابد أن يتبادر إلى ذهن المتتبع جملة من التساؤلات، مثل هل كانت هنالك خدمات بريدية عامة تخدم الجمهور بين مختلف أقاليم الدولة الإسلامية؟ وإذا لم توجد فكيف كانت العامة من الناس تغطي حاجتها إلى مثل هذه الخدمات الضرورية في نطاق العلاقات الاجتماعية عامة، وعملية التبادل التجاري وما يترتب على ذلك من عمليات مصرفية متبادلة بين المدن والولايات على مستوى التجارة والتجار خاصة للإجابة على مثل هذه التساؤلات كان لابد من البحث في مختلف المصادر، فقد ورد في الروايات التاريخية، ما يشير إلى وجود بريد شعبي (غير رسمي) تولى حمل رسائل الجمهور بين مدينة وأخرى قبل الفيوج. كما يبدو أن التفيج أصبح مهنة يرتزق منها. وشهدت تطورا كبيرا على المستوى الرسمي أو الوضع الخاص، كما تشير الدراسة لدورهم الإقليمي والدولي في مصر وشمال إفريقيا، كما تعرض أهم الأخطار التي تعرضوا لها في عملهم، وما كانوا يتقاضونه من أجر زهيد، بالإضافة إلى ملابسهم البسيطة.

And if it does not exist, how was the general public covering its need for such necessary services in the scope of social relations in general, and the process of trade exchange and the consequent banking exchanges between cities and states at the level of trade and merchants in particular 'To answer such questions, it was necessary to Research in various sources has been mentioned in historical narratives, indicating the existence of a popular (unofficial) mail that carried the messages of the public from one city to another before the fuji (1).
