المستخلص: To better understand the concept of social enterprise, it is useful to situate the context of development of this concept which, in fact, justifies its growing importance. Several works have attempted to define this concept and the fields in which these initiatives develop. This contribution is a conceptual and exploratory study aimed at improving knowledge of social enterprise. In the first part of this article, we retrace the emergence of the concept of social enterprise in the North American and European contexts. Then, we approach more particularly an approach led by the network "Emergence of social enterprises in Europe" (EM.ES), which brings together researchers from European Community countries. Finally, we study The conceptualization of social enterprise with other related concepts.

Pour mieux comprendre le concept d'entreprise sociale, il est utile de situer le contexte de développement de ce concept qui, de fait, justifie son importance grandissante. Plusieurs travaux ont tenté de définir ce concept et les champs dans lesquels ces initiatives se développent La présente contribution est une étude conceptuelle et exploratrice visant à améliorer la connaissance de l'entreprise sociale. Dans une première partie de cet article, nous retraçons l'émergence du concept d'entreprise sociale dans les contextes nord-américain et européen. Ensuite, nous abordons plus particulièrement une approche menée par le réseau " Emergence des Entreprises Sociales en Europe " (EMIS), qui réunit des chercheurs des pays de la Communauté européenne. Enfin, nous étudions La conceptualisation de l'entreprise sociale avec d'autres concepts connexes.
