إن طبيعة العلاقة بين البيئة والأمن علاقة متباينة، فمن جهة كلما كنا في بيئة سليمة وصحية ازدادت فرص الأمن وارتقت، لكن من جهة أخرى كلما ارتفع مستوى الأمن الإنساني قد يؤدي إلى اتجاهين إما للمحافظة وحماية البيئة من طرف الإنسان أو ازدياد الاعتداءات عليها لأجل إشباع الحاجيات اللامحدودة للفرد. والأمن البيئي من مقترب الأمن الإنساني هو وصول الإنسان إلى حالة من الطمأنينة وقدرته على ممارسة الخيارات المختلفة من خلال العيش في ظروف بيئة ملائمة، فالأمن البيئي يركز على مسائل أكثر أهمية منها تبادل المعلومات المتعلقة بالبيئة ومسألة حقوق الإنسان، وتأثير العولمة، وتأثيرات أنماط الاستهلاك للدول الشمال على الجنوب. ويركز على معالجة سبب التدهور البيئي من جذوره، وذلك بخفض وتيرة مساهمة الإنسان في هذا التدهور. وبالنسبة للسياسات البيئية التي ينتهجها الأمن الإنساني بصفة عامة والأمن البيئي بصفة خاصة هناك ثلاث استراتيجيات أساسية هي استراتيجية استباقية تهدف لمنع الحركيات المنتجة لأسباب اللا أمن البيئي، واستراتيجية وقائية تتعامل مع أسباب ودوافع التهديدات، ثم استراتيجية الحماية تعمل على احتواء التدهور البيئي والحد من آثاره.
