يعتبر المسكن الركيزة الأساسية في تكوين الأسرة وسلامة نموها لأنه يؤثر بشكل إيجابي في أمان واستقرار المجتمع، حيث إن للبيت مردود ثقافياً ونفسياً على الأسرة، فلم يكن مجرد حاجة للمأوى، بل كان المسكن في نظرهم يجمع بين عناصر الجمال والراحة والبساطة لتحقيق المتعة البصرية، والراحة النفسية، والتحقيق الوظيفي الذي يوفره المبنى السكني. والمسكن هو ذلك الإنشاء الهندسي المصمم بطريقة فنية وجمالية، ونرى أن البيت العربي والأسرة العربية يشكلان وحدة متكاملة في التقسيم الهندسي للبيت حيث تراعى فيه إحكام الشريعة الإسلامية التي تحرص على منع الاختلاط. يهدف البحث إلى: 1. استغلال المساحات المهملة والجمع بين ناحية جمالية ووظيفية. 2. اعادة فكرة استغلال الأسطح بشكل أفضل يتناسب مع تعاليم ديننا وعادتنا. 3. استخدام برامج التصميم بالحاسب الآلي في ابتكار تصميمات لاستغلال أسطح المسكن السعودي. توصل البحث إلى: 1. مواكبة التطور بعملية متزنة ومرنة تتطلع وتتقبل الأفكار الإبداعية التي تثري الحياة بإذن الله وتزيدها قيمة وبهجة وسرور. 2. تحويل الأسطح المنزلية إلى مساحات خضراء أمر لا يحتاج إلى الكثير من الجهد، فهي تعطي المنزل جمالاً وتضيف رئة جديدة للبيئة التي اختنقت من التلوث. 3. تقليل التلوث البيئي الناتج عن زيادة مساحات المباني والمنشآت وتأكل الغطاء النباتي الكافي بين المباني المختلفة. 4. توفير جزء من دخل الأسرة حيث تستطيع الأسرة استخدام زراعة أسطح المنازل لتغطية جزء من احتياجات الأسرة، علاوة على أنه يمكن استخدامه كمشروع اقتصادي وبالتالي إضافة عائد جديد للأسرة. أوصي البحث بـــ: 1. احترام الخصوصية بين المنزل والجار وذلك من خلال استغلال المساحات في أفكار إبداعية وتصاميم تتناسب مع بيئتنا حسب احتياجاتنا. 2. استغلال مساحة أسطح المنازل الصغيرة كمتنفس للعائلة وتصميمها كحديقة منزلية، عمل مسبح للعائلة، ملعب أطفال، توفير جلسات بأثاث مناسب. 3. ضرورة استقلال المساحات الضائعة وتوظيف الإمكانات المتاحة في سد الاحتياجات الفعلية بشكل مبتكر. 4. إعادة النظر في أهمية استخدام الرواشين بطريقة جمالية ووظيفية في تجميل مناطق متعددة للمباني السكنية السعودية.
