المستخلص: يرتكز هذا البحث في تناوله لرواية العمى للكاتب البرتغالي خوسيه ساراماجو على نظرية النقد البيئي التي ظهرت على الساحة النقدية في السنوات الأخيرة من القرن العشرين وذلك من حيث استلهام الكاتب للعلاقة الشائكة بين الإنسان المعاصر وبين البيئة بكل مفرداتها، وهي علاقة متوترة نشأت عن صخب الحياة الحديثة وتلوثها السمعي والبصري والفكري والوجودي والحضاري. ويسلط البحث الضوء على حرص الكاتب على طرح مشكلات بيئية معينة في إطار الواقعية السحرية مثل مشكلة وباء العمى الذي أصاب إحدى المدن بشكل مفاجئ وكيف تعاملت معه السلطات القائمة على نحو لا يتفق مع برامج الأمم المتحدة التي تتحدث عن كيفية معالجة الكوارث البيئية بشكل علمي مما خلف آثارا هائلة على الإنسان والبيئة المجاورة، كما يتم التركيز على رؤية ساراماجو المتفردة التي لا تكتفي بتصوير جحيم وباء العمى بكل دقة بل تتجاوز ذلك إلى طرح زملة من الحلول على رأسها وعي الإنسان البيئي الذي يتحتم على المسئولين تعظيمه بالتوازي مع تعميق رغبة من حلت بهم تلك الكارثة البيئية في الخلاص من آثارها بيئا ووجوديا.

This paper examines Jose Saramago’s novel Blindness in the context of ecocriticism, a school of criticism that has recently grappled with the problematic relationship between man and the environment. The theory investigates the role literature can play in understanding and improving ecological issues such as man’s precarious position in the postmodern world in what seems to be a break with traditional criticism that has been categorically interested in the aesthetic appreciation of works of art. It is also concerned with the study of the ecological hazards brought about by our postmodern world in the aftermath of world wars and as a result of the scientific revolution characterizing the greater parts of the last and the present centuries. Blindness is thus predicated on the premise that a whole city is gradually afflicted by the epidemic of blindness, an ecological catastrophe which baffles the government that sends afflicted people to the quarantine. The doctor’s wife who escapes blindness is the. only witness to the horrors emanating from such a disaster as she oversees and registers the abasement, meanness, savagery, and dehumanization characterizing most blind people under these horrid circumstances. Through her lenses, the writer sets the normal and the abnormal, the humane and the brutal, the wise and the lunatic against each other. The magical realism of the novel, reminiscent of the world of Garcia Marquise, is appropriated by Saramago to approach a cosmological crisis from a literary perspective, a parallel solution that is at once aesthetically pleasurable and ecologically rewarding.
