انشغل الفكر الإصلاحي العربي بسبل المواجهة السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية لما تعانيه الأمة من طغيان واستبداد وتعددت الرؤى في ذلك. واعتبر الانسان "رجلا وامرأة" أساس الإصلاح والتغيير. وقد أخذ خطاب النخبة الإصلاحية العربية حول المرأة بعدا تحريريا وتجديديا وذلك عبر قراءة النصوص الدينية بناء على مقاصد الشريعة في نشر قيم العدل والمساواة والتحاور والتعارف مع الأخر وغيرها من القيم الانسانية والمقومات النهضوية التي تمثل السبيل والمخرج للأزمة الحضارية.. إلا أن الأمر لا يسلم من اختلاف فكان هناك اتجاه كان محمد عبده والحجوي أبرز ممثليه ويرى انه لا يمكن أن يصلح آخر الامة إلا بما صلح به أولها، أي ان الوصفة تكمن في العودة للمعين الأول عبر الاقتداء بالسلف الصالح زمن الرسالة وذلك لن يقوم إلا بتنقية ما شاب الدين من جمود؛ واتجاه آخر كان قاسم أمين أبرز القائلين به ويرى مكمن الداء في مخلفات الماضي وأن الدواء في تجاوزه. هذه الدعاوى كانت الانطلاقة لفكر الحداثة الذي أصبح يزحف على رابطتي "الإسلام" و"العروبة" وهي تقيم قياسا يجعل المجتمعات الغربية في قمة سلم "العصر" وهذا ما كان مع الطاهر الحداد، بحيث أن تقليد ظواهر الحضارة الغربية أو الابتعاد عنها أصبح هو معيار التقدم أو التخلف. وإن جرأة الطرح لدى الاتجاهين بالقياس للفترة الزمنية التي جاء فيها النقاش يجعلنا نتبين شجاعة مبنية على أسس التعلق بالأصول والفهم المبني على قراءة النص وإعمال العقل والتفكير في المشكل والحل من منطلق المدركات الجماعية وليس بما يضرب فيها
