الدراسة التاريخية لأزياء تعد إحدى مقومات الحضارة الإنسانية، حيث أنها لا تقل أهمية دراستها عن دراسة تاريخ أي فرع من فروع الفنون الأخرى لما تظهره من طرز متنوعة لأي حقبة تاريخية، وهي تعد وثيقة هامة تعبر تعبيرا صادقا عن تراث تلك الحقبة ومما لا شك فيه أن دراسة تاريخ الزي يعتبر من العوامل التي توضح مدى التقدم الحضاري للشعوب، وبخاصة أزياء المرأة حيث أنها مرآة تعكس تاريخ كل أمة، وتعبر عن حالة المجتمع الذي تظهر فيه، وفن أزياء المرأة يعد من الفنون التشكيلية، وتمتاز تصميمات بحرية التعبير عن فكر وشخصية المصمم الفنان، وطريقة أدائه ومصادر إلهامه المختلفة وموضة أزياء المرأة في العصر الحديث في كثير من الأحيان تكون امتداد لمظاهر الحضارات السابقة، وقد أدرك مصمم الأزياء فضل تلك الحضارات الذي اعتباره تراث يجب المحافظة عليه ودراسته لمعرفة الأصول والركائز التي تبنى عليها الحضارات الحالية، لذا يهدف هذا البحث إلى التعرف على فلسفة تصميم الأزياء، كما يهدف إلى إلقاء الضوء على التطور التاريخي لأزياء المرأة عبر العصور.
