This research, entitled History of Religions in Southern Sudan, presents (from the entry of the Turkish-Egyptian army in 1820 to the secession of southern Sudan in 201) a specialized scientific discussion. The researcher highlights the history of Islam, Christianity, and traditional beliefs in southern Sudan during that specific period.
The first chapter of the research focuses on the geography and history of the South Sudan land, followed by the second chapter that discusses traditional beliefs there.
The third chapter is devoted to talking about Christianity and the history of its introduction into the territory of South Sudan and the missionary bodies that worked there. It also explained how the British colonizer contributed to this, and one of its most important steps was the enactment of the law of forbidden areas.
In the fourth and concluding chapter, the researcher dealt with the history of the introduction of Islam into the territory of southern Sudan. It also discussed those who contributed to it and its relation with many variables that contributed or prevented the Islamic tide until the situation reached the point of secession of southern Sudan as an independent state.
In light of these chapters, a series of results were achieved, most notably:
South Sudan has no history, and the heavenly religions did not enter it before 1820. This is attributed to the harsh nature of the regions of the South geographically, in addition to the fact that traditional beliefs in South Sudan and throughout Africa have no universal character, as they have no source or origin. There is also a similarity with common features and characteristics of those beliefs throughout Africa. There is a direct relationship between the colonist and missionary missions. It is also a strong reason for the spread of Christianity in South Sudan, given these missionary organizations' interest in health and education, which the southern population desperately needed. The visitor to those areas also notes that some dispersive churches are influenced by some African beliefs that have emerged clearly in some church activities such as traditional dances, magic, etc.
The Falata tribes, traders, and Egyptian engineers had a great role in spreading Islam in South Sudan. Arab and Islamic culture was subjected to cultural cleansing by the law enacted by the colonizer, known as the law on forbidden areas. The Sufi schools actively participated in the dissemination of Islam. We also must work to help Muslims in South Sudan in the fields of education and development.
