|b Widows are often burdened with the responsibility of educating, supporting and giving love to their orphaned children, all by themselves. This is a religion and humanity issue that needs serious attention. Therefore, this study aims to identify the protective mechanism of single mothers and orphans according to Islamic law. Data were collected from library sources with a focus on holistically re-analyzed nafaqat laws; that is, by relating it to other laws such as wilayat al-nikah and faraid, while closely observing the tafsīr of the Qur’anic verses and hadiths pertaining to the treatment received by single mothers and orphans, either in an instructive or descriptive form. The study found that single mothers who experience the situation should be exempted from the financial burden in raising her orphaned children. The alimony of her orphaned children should be borne by the children’ guardian or the heir of their father, according to inheritance law and order. Apart from that, Islam also encourages the community to help take care of these single mothers and orphans in several other ways.
