عرف الكلام العربي من قديم عهده ألوانا من التفنن في صياغة العبارة، شملت الجملة، فطالتها من جوانب عديدة، كالتقديم والتأخير والحذف، وفي الجوانب البلاغية من الاستعارة والكناية والتشبيه، كما شملت الكلمة المفردة من جوانب الترادف والقلب المكاني والمشترك اللفظي والتضاد والزيادة، فضلا عن الأمور المتعلقة بالأصوات وتأثير بعضها في بعض، وألوان المحسنات البديعية بأقسامها وأنواعها التي صارت دراستها جزءا أساسيا في الدرس البلاغي. وأدلى اللغويون بدلوهم في البحث الذي يتناول، بالإضافة إلى أمور القاعدة النحوية والصرفية، مسائل تتصل بخصائص العربية في التعبير، وهو ما درسه علماء فقه اللغة تحت عنوانات مثل سنن العرب في كلامها، وأسرار اللغة أو سر العربية، كما فعل ابن فارس والثعالبي، ومن قبلهما بث سيبويه في كتابه، والخليل في معجم العين ملاحظات يتعلق كثير منها بالفوارق التعبيرية كالإخبار بالنكرة والمعرفة وتقديم الخبر على المبتدأ، والفرق بين الإخبار بالفعل والإخبار بالوصف، أو بين التعبير بالفعل والتعبير بالوصف، والاستدلال على تلكم الفروق بشواهد من الذكر الحكيم، والحديث الشريف، وكلام العرب شعره ومنثوره. وقد جرى التطبيق في البحث على نماذج من الكلام العربي الفصيح في مستوياته المختلفة، فشمل نصوصا من القرآن الكريم، والحديث الشريف، والشعر العربي من أقدم عصوره، وكذلك نماذج من النثر العربي الفني، فضلا عن الحكم والأمثال. وقد أظهرت نتائج البحث مدى أثر حب المشاكلة في بنية الكلام العربي، مفرداته وتراكيبه وجمله، على مدى الزمان، وما يزال هذا الأثر يجد مكانه في كلام الناطقين بالعربية بكل مستوياته ولدى كل مستوياتهم.
