إن حضارة وادي الرافدين العريقة والغزيرة بآثارها الشاخصة وغير الشاخصة والتي تتمثل بالتحف المنقولة والصروح والأبنية غير المنقولة لها أثرها البالغ في هذه الحضارة وتعد العمارة التراثية آخر الحلقات في سلسلة تطور هذه الحضارة العظيمة والحمامات التراثية إحدى الوجوه البارزة من هذه الحضارة وتناولت في بحثي الحمامات التراثية حمامات مدينة كربلاء المقدسة انموذجا، وقمت بتقسيم البحث إلى فصل واحد تضمن ثلاثة مباحث وتناولت في المبحث الأول الحمام لغة واصطلاحا ومواصفات الحمام وفي المبحث الثاني أولى الحمامات الإسلامية وثم الحمام في البيوت التراثية وفي المبحث الثالث كانت هناك وقفة على حمامات مدينة كربلاء المقدسة ووصف الحمامات وتطرقت أيضا إلى الحمامات الشعبية والعاملون في الحمام وما يستخدم في الحمام وكانت هناك وقفة على حمامات النساء وكيفية إشعال الحمام ثم الخاتمة وعززت بحثي بمجموعة من الصور والأشكال لزيادة الفائدة العلمية. وان الحمامات تشكل مرفقاً حيوياً من بين المرافق الأكثر أهمية في المدينة العربية الإسلامية منذ بداية العصر الإسلامي فبات وجودها في كافة الأزمنة من المكملات الأساسية في رسم نسيج المدينة أو جزءا أساساً من تخطيطها، وان الحمامات من المؤسسات الخدمية التي لها علاقة مباشرة بحياة الفرد والمجتمع ومن ثم يكون لها دور حضاري متميز ولما كان من مبادئ الإسلام الطهارة والنظافة لذلك كان ظهور هذه المؤسسة الخدمية التي تسمى حمام من الضروريات في المجتمع الإسلامي وأن الحمامات تشترك فيما بينها بجملة خصائص منها الخصوصية في التخطيط فهى تعتمد على النظام الثلاثي (القاعة الباردة، الدافئة، الساخنة) وتميزت واجهاتها الداخلية والخارجية بالبساطة وخلوها من أي ضرب من ضروب الزخرفة إذا كان لهذا المعلم العمراني أهمية كبيرة في المجتمع لارتباطه براحة الفرد ونظافته وطهارته.
