تكشف هذه الدراسة عن جزء أصيل من التاريخ الإسلامي في شرق أفريقيا، وتحديدا في منطقة القرن الأفريقي من أرض الصومال الحالية، والتي عرفت عبر العصور التاريخية باسم بلاد (البربر). ورغم تعدد الأماكن التي شاركتها نفس الاسم، إلا إن هذا الاسم كثيرا ما تكرر ذكره عند وصف المناطق الصومالية في مصنفات الجغرافيين والرحالة المسلمين، وذلك منذ بداية تدوينها في مطلع القرن الثالث الهجري (التاسع الميلادي). ولا يعني هذا أن اسم البربر الذي عرفت به بلاد الصومال ظهر في ذاك العصر؛ فالثابت من التراث التاريخي والجغرافي والأدبي واللغوي للحضارات القديمة التي سبقت الإسلام، يؤكد أن الأراضي الصومالية اشتهرت بهذا الاسم منذ القرن الأول الميلادي، وقد شاع تداوله حتى القرن الثامن الهجري (الرابع عشر الميلادي)، ليحل بعده اسم بلاد الزيلع أو الزيالعة إلى ظهور الاسم الحالي (الصومال) في القرن التاسع الهجري (الخامس عشر الميلادي). وبالتالي، فإن تاريخ الصومال لم يكن مجهولا في العصور الإسلامية، بل كان مهملا، والمعلوم أن وصف البلاد ومواضعها، مظانه كتب الجغرافيا والبلدان ونحوها. وانطلاقا من هذا اليقين، فسوف يسلط البحث الضوء على كتابات الجغرافيين وروايات الرحالة في العصور الإسلامية عن تلك المناطق الصومالية؛ للوقوف على المسميات التاريخية بمعلومات جغرافية توضيح الصورة الحقيقية التي كانت عليها هذه البلاد.
