520 | |b This research makes a new approach to the known fragment attributed to Aeschylus and which was referred to by Athenaeus (Athen, Deipnosoph. 8.39 = 8.347 e). The common interpretation of this saying tends to consider that Aeschylus was speaking, in this fragment, modestly. He wanted to clarify that the topics of his plays were derived from Homer’s heroic poems and that his treatments seemed modest if compared with Homer’s poems. The researcher exerted much effort in reading the fragment in the context of Athenaeus’ text, taking into consideration the nature of epic singing as well as the topics dealt with by Aeschylus. The researcher concluded that Aeschylus hadn’t focused only on the topics treated by Homer, nor on those included in the Trojan epic circle, he rather made use of the mythical and epic traditions in a selective way that was compatible with his ideas. Moreover, the researcher came up with the fact that Aeschylus had meant by “Homer’s Banquets” those which had been already mentioned in “Odyssey” written by Homer, where the epic singing was accompanied, in most occasions, with banquets. The researcher clarifies that by “crumbs” he pointed to the long tragic works with many events in comparison with the topics treated by epic poems, as the tragic work deals with one event with a limited time, while the epic poems deal with complex events with unlimited time. Thus, Aeschylus’ purpose of his fragment, according to the researcher’s viewpoint, was to clarify that his tragic plays were worthwhile just as the works of the epic poets, as they were derived from the same mythical source. However, tragedy is different from epic poems, as it deals with topics of one event with a limited time, making it clear, with proud not with modesty, that he retackled limited minor events which had been accidently handled by epic poems in an intensive tragic framework, thus the comparison came in his favor, as the treatment of those limited topics, when it comes to time and events, reveals his ability as a genius tragic poet. The researcher adopted the analytical and comparative methods and the “hypersexuality theory”. | ||
