المستخلص: This paper is a semantic study which traces the multiple semantic functions of the preposition ἐκ in “historiae” of Herodotus who properly employed this preposition to serve his rhetorical purposes. In Greek, a single preposition can be followed by more than one case, and in each case it has an independent meaning. However, only when the preposition ἐκ is followed by the genitive case, its meaning is determined by its context. The preposition ἐκ appears in Herodotus (1161) times, and the researcher divides them into twelve categories, as follows: 1- the indication of distance from the place, whether this place is a sea or mountain or city or state, 2- the indication of the source, and whether this source is the object’s material, the children’s pedigree or the source of information. 3-attachment to something, so the preposition ἐκ comes with verbs indicating attachment 4-indication of directions, 5-indication of a partition 6-indication of time, where the preposition carries the meaning of either "since" or "after". 7-It is followed by the agent instead of the preposition “ὑπό” in the passive voice sentence 8- it appears in the sense of “in Consequence of ”, 9- it appears in the sense of " According to ",10- it has the meaning of “by the will of ”, 11- it appears in the sense of “on the part of” 12-it is used by Herodotus with some words to make an expression that gives the meaning of the adverb such as ἐξ ὑστέρης " afterwards " ἐκ νέης “newly”.
