المستخلص: لقد ازدهرت الثقافة وتقدم الفن، كما انتشرت وظهرت بعض الحركات الفنية الحديثة في "العصر الفيكتوري" والذي يعد أحد العصور التي انتشرت فيها الثقافة وتقدم الفن، كما انتشرت فيه قوانين الإصلاح الاجتماعي والاهتمام بالأخلاقيات والسلوك مما جعل هذه الفترة تتميز بالسلام والهدوء والرقي في التعامل، وانعكس ذلك على الشعور بالوطنية والانتماء، والثقة بالنفس. والناقد "جون راسكن" أحد المنتمين إلى ذلك العصر فيهدف البحث إلى إلقاء الضوء والكشف عن دور الناقد "جون راسكن" في دعم الفنانين الحديثين في فترة العصر الفيكتوري وكذلك الحركات الفنية التي ساندها ودعمها. كما يهدف إلى محاولة الاستفادة من تجربة "جون راسكن" الفنية النقدية كنموذج يمكن أن يكون إيجابياً فاعلاً في الحركة النقدية التشكيلية. وتكمن أهمية البحث في محاولة إثراء المكتبة العربية بدراسات بحثية تتناول فترة قل بل ندر تناولها في الأبحاث العربية وهي فترة "العصر الفيكتوري"، وكذا التعريف بناقد معروف على الصعيد العالمي مثل الناقد "جون راسكن" والذي يعد من أشهر النقاد البريطانيين.

The aim of the research is to reveal the importance of John Ruskin to Arabic scholars. Ruskin was the foremost English art critic of the Victorian period and a prominent social thinker. With its powerful navy and high-performing industry, Britain in the Victorian era had the largest empire in history, and national confidence was at its highest point. There was an increasingly liberal political agenda, with political and industrial reform and extension of the right to vote. Ideologically, there was an increasing emphasis on romanticism in the fields of religion, social values and the Arts and Crafts movement. Among Ruskin’s many other achievements, he was also an art philanthropist, a distinguished watercolorist, a poet, and an essay writer on a very wide range of subjects, including architecture, education, social justice and political economy. Ruskin’s writings and ideas foreshadow such contemporary themes as environmentalism, sustainability and the importance of craftsmanship in the economic process. He was closely linked to other famous Victorians in the field of the arts, such as JMW Turner and William Morris. In one of his most famous works of art criticism, “Modern Painters”, employing aesthetic and scientific observation, he defended the work of Turner, arguing that the main role of the artist was to be morally and materially true to nature. He also focused on the Renaissance period, arguing that great artists must perceive beauty and express it symbolically, using their imagination. Ruskin was also a champion of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which was strongly influenced by his ideas. His extensive study of Venetian architecture in particular led him to reject the classical tradition and to champion the Gothic style. He argued that the craftsman should be free to express his own ideas, ideally using his hands rather than machinery. In this way Ruskin came to attack industrial capitalism and the division of labor, and to campaign for social justice. Many of Ruskin’s ideas were later incorporated into the British welfare state. Ruskin needs to be made more accessible to students in the Arab region, so that his influence and relevance in the fields of art, architecture and craftsmanship, which continue into the 21st century, can be fully appreciated. Furthermore, Ruskin’s influence extends internationally and has been acknowledged by numerous distinguished scholars, thinkers and politicians. The researcher also intends to leverage her stay in the UK to access some of the many institutions and collections that preserve Ruskin’s legacy.
