المستخلص: The present study deals with an Autosegmental analysis of intonation in English and Arabic preaches. Intonation is the lowering and rising of pitch within the sentence. Intonation is considering an important aspect of pronunciation. Autosegmental theory analyzes intonation in a new perspective by considering intonation as an autosegment. The main aim is to show how pitch and intonation in English and Modern Standard Arabic are independent “autosegmental” and to show the persuasive strategies used by the Priest/Imam in the sermon/ Khutbah. It is hypothesized that tone and intonation are autosegments and they are not affected by the changes on the segments, and that the Priest/Imam uses many strategies to convince and persuade his audience. Accordingly, ten sentences are chosen from both English and Arabic preaches to be analyzed in terms of Autosegmental theory.
