Economic development, used to refer to an increase in a country’s GNP or per capita income. Because the relatively rapid growth in per capita GNP of developing countries since the 1950’s has had only a limited effect in reducing poverty, issues of income distribution and basic needs were seriously considered in the development process. The basic needs approach shifted attention from maximizing output to maximizing poverty. The stress became not only on how is being produced, but also on what is being produced, in what ways, for whom, and with what impact. However, due to the importance of human as well as environmental aspects, the focus has shifted to sustainable development which tries to find a real balance between economic and environmental systems of the society. Arab countries experience with sustainable development is relatively new which has its impact on the future of planning in such countries. In that matter, it is important to look at environment and human development indicators in Arab countries through their economic policies. The study is divided into three major's parts. The first reviews the evolution of the concept of sustainable development. The second analyses sustainable development in Arab countries through analyzing the basic needs aspects of the population and the environmental elements involved. The third part shows the repercussions of sustainable development on the future of planning in Arab countries.
