المستخلص: تعد نظرية "وحدة البحر المتوسط" إشكالية وجدت من يبرزها ويروجها في هيئة نظرية تاريخية فلسفية، بفضل صاحبها المؤرخ البلجيكى هنرى بريين Henry Pirenne (1862 - 1935م) الذى تناولها في مؤلفاته مثل: "مدن العصور الوسطى" وكذلك في كتابه "شارلمان ومحمد"؛ فتم وضعها في إطار فكر استعماري لمؤرخ في العصور الوسطى فكانت نظرية "وحدة البحر المتوسط" بصبغتها الاقتصادية والتجارية، واتهامها للمسلمين بكسر وحدة البحر المتوسط حينما تمكن المسلمون من العبور إلى شمال أفريقيا ومنها إلى الأندلس، فأصبح البحر المتوسط منقسماً إلى شقين شمال مسيحي وجنوب إسلامي، وانتهى التجمع "الكومنولث" العائلي الذى جمع شعوب حوض البحر المتوسط، وبدلاً من أن يكون البحر المتوسط بحيرة رومانية أصبح بحيرة إسلامية، وبدلاً من توحيد شرق وغرب أوروبا أصبح شمال مسيحي وجنوب مسلم. أصبحت تلك النظرية موضع جدال بين مؤيد يعتبرها "وصية تاريخية" ذات بعد استراتيجي في تشكيل وجهة نظر الغرب المسيحي تجاه الشرق الإسلامي. أما الجانب المعارض فيصفها بأنها "النظرية الكارثية" الغارقة في الفرضيات الجدلية، بيد أن هناك جانباً دينياً تغاضى المؤرخون عن دراسته بالشكل الكافي حتى لا يتهمهم الغرب بالانحياز لمناصرة التاريخ والحضارة الإسلامية، رغم أنه تم إحياء تلك النظرية من جديد في دوائر الإعلاميين والأكاديميين في الغرب لتشويه صورة الإسلام، وجعل تلك النظرية أحد فصول نظرية "صدام الحضارات".

The Theory of "The Unity of The Mediterranean" is a problem that found its advocate and propagation in a historical and philosophical form, thanks to its author, the Belgian historian Henri Pierenne (1862- 1935 AD) who dealt with it in his books such as: "Medieval Cities" as well as in his book "Charlemagne and Muhammad"; he composed it in the context of colonial thought by a medieval historian, so the theory of the "unity of the Mediterranean" was in its economic and commercial nature And accusing the Muslims of breaking the unity of the Mediterranean when the Muslims crossed to North Africa and from there to Andalusia, then the Mediterranean became divided into two parts, north for Christians and south for Muslims, thus invasion ending the family of the Commonwealth that gathered peoples of the Mediterranean basin, and instead of the Mediterranean being a Roman lake, it became an Islamic lake. & Instead of unifying eastern and western Europe, it became a Christian north and a Muslim south. This theory has become subject of controversy among supporters who consider it a "historical will" with a strategic dimension in shaping the Christian West's view of the Islamic East. As for the other side, he describes it as a "catastrophic theory", However there is a religious aspect that historians have neglected to study sufficiently so that the West does not accuse them of bias towards Islamic history civilization, although that theory was revived again in circles of media Politicians , and academics in the West to distort the image Islam, and making that theory one of the chapters of the "Clash of Civilizations Theory".
