يعد "هولمز رولستون" من أهم الفلاسفة المعاصرين المهتمين بمجال الايكولوجيا وخاصة القيم الايكولوجيا والأخلاق. وتعود أهميته إلى اختلافه عن أتباع النظرة الكلاسيكية للأخلاق لاسيما- النفعية.... إلخ والتي اتخذت من الإنسان وحده منبعا للقيم والأخلاق. فتعد المنفعة التي يرغبها الإنسان وحدها الخير الأقصى أي المرغوب فيه لذاته دون نتائجه، والضرر والألم وحده الشر الأقصى، وجعلت من هذه المبادىء نبراسا للسلوك الإنساني. أما "رولستون" فقد تحرر من هذه النظرة الكلاسيكية الضيقة للأخلاق والقيم، فلم تعد الأخلاق والقيم عنده محصورين فى الإنسان وحده، أي أنه الكائن الوحيد القادر على إصدار الحكم القيمي، وإنما هناك طرف أخر فى المعادلة قد ظهر من خلال مفهوم "اتساع المجال الخلقي" ألا وهو الطبيعة. لكل منهما قيمه المختلفة. وتعرف تلك النظرة الجديدة لـ "رولستون" بالرؤية الشاملة للقيم الإيكولوجية، والتي تدور حول تقييم الطبيعة بكافة محتوياتها من أنواع وأجناس وأفراد- فلا تختص تلك الرؤية بنوع بعينه أو جنس أو فرد. مثلما كان يتم النظر في السابق إلى حد بعينه من حدود المعادلة البيئية، كما لا تتجاهل رؤيته في الوقت نفسه التطور الطبيعى لأطوار النظم البيئية المختلفة منذ نشأتها وصولا لما هي عليه الآن، فضلا عن التمييز بين إملاءات الطبيعة على الإنسان، أي تأثر الإنسان بالطبيعة، وكذلك ثقافته، وهذا ما نحتسبه تجديدا.
Holmes Rolston is one of the most remarkable contemporary philosophers who are concerned with ecology, especially ecological values and ethics. This importance is due to the distinction from the supporters of the classical view of ethics, especially utilitarianism.... etc., which adopt man as a provenance of values and ethics. The benefit that man desires is the ultimate good which is desirable for itself without its consequences, harm and pain solo is the extreme evil and made these principles a light for human behavior; as human actions are not good unless they are achieved or their owner expects a benefit from them. As for Rolston, he has been freed from this narrow classical vision of ethics and values, for his point of view, Ethics and values are no longer restricted to man alone, that is, he is the only being who is capable of producing a value judgment but there is another side in the equation that has emerged through the concept of the expansion of the ethical field, which is nature. Each has a different value .This new vision of Ruston is recognized as the comprehensive view of ecological values, which goes around the evaluation of nature with all its components of species, races and individuals- this vision does not concern with a certain type, gender or individual as was previously considered to a certain extent of the environmental equation, also his vision does not ignore the natural development of different stages of ecosystems from their beginning to what they are now as well as the distinction among the commands of nature on man ,that is ,the influence of man with nature as well as his culture and this is what we consider an innovation.
